making news in america this morning. >> lost at sea. seven american tourists are still missing after a fishing boat capsized. why authorities say that even after two days of drifting in the ocean, they may still be alive. then waiting for justice. the fate of casey anthony is now in the hands of the jury. could a verdict in her murder trial come as soon as today? and rockets' red glare. celebrated its 235th birthday. good morning. the mexican navy is still holding out hope for survivors after that horrifying accident off the coast. seven u.s. tourists are still missing, but officials say the weather may be working in their favor. >> yeah, let's hope so.

those who survived are telling harrowing stories of being afloat for hours before being rescued. john hendren is joining us with new details on this. john, just an incredible story. >> reporter: it is, peggy. good morning. the fishing vessel is called "the eriri" it was built in holland, so it had stabilizers to handle the north sea but no match for what's being described as a freak storm. the american tourists got their most chilling wake-up call ever. >> passengers were awaken by other passengers and crew members and alerted that the ship was sinking. >> reporter: survivor charles gibson said it happened in the dead of night while most were sound asleep. >> extremely large winds and wawar contributed to the dangerous conditions most likely causing the ship to take on water and sink. passengers were in the water for over 16 hours. >> reporter: the boat left san felipe on saturday for a seven-day fishing trip, but early sunday morning 60 miles south of san felipe it hit a flash storm

off the baja peninsula. the navy says two giant waves struck the boat capsizing g . at 2:30 monday morning, the vessel sank. michael ing was one of two dozen americans on board. he swam to safety clinging to a cooler. >> they had life jackets on and they actually did have time to put on life jacket, so that's a good thing ande's a strong swimmer so i'm really glad. >> reporter: 44 passengers and crew were on board, 27 of them americans when the boat flipped over and sank. at least one american is dead. several others missing. the california secretary of state's website says operator baja sport fishing's business license has been suspended. early reports said the mission was to recover the bodies of those lost, but the mexican navy now says it is extending the search for survivors. that water was warm and some, they say, may still be alive. daniel and peggy? >> that's good to keach the hope alive there. john, the survivors were in the water quite a long time. what condition were they actually in when they were rescued? >> reporter: well, it turns out they were sunburned but in good condition.

the water was about 77 degrees so despite the fact that they wererehere for 16 hours, they were able to survive it. they were taken to clinics for checkups. some had cuts and bruises and one diabetic was taken to a naval hospital for a checkup in san felipe, but you could safely say that this is an incident they will never forget, whatever condition they're in. daniel and peggy? >> right, we'll continue to watch that story. john hendren live in than washington, thank you. well, the prosecution in new york may be on shaky ground but there is new trouble for dominique strauss-kahn. this time in his native france. >> yeah, a young french writer says she will formally accuse the former international monetary fund chief of trying to rape her during aok interview i2 book interview in 2002. strauss-kahn denies that and says he'll file a criminal complaint of slander against her. his replacement christine lagarde takes over today as head of the imf. lagarde is the former finance minister of france.. >> and she is the first woman

to run the global institution and set to serve a five-year term. well, some cases of autism could be linked to a certain type of antidepressant. a study published in "the archives of general psychiatry" just published found that the risk of autism doubled if the mother used an ssri class of antidepressant in the year before pregnancy. the study pointed out the number of autism cases that could be linked to the antidepressant is very small. exxonmobil is conceding that the oil spill in montana is worse than it first estimated. exxon is promising to do whatever it can to clean up the estimated 42,000 gallons of oil that spilled over the weekend. it's unclear what caused the spill exactly. one theory blames the heavy water and melting snow causing floods downstream. >> and realtors warn -- >> you expect floods. a river like yellowstone floods all the time and we can't expect our pipelines to break every time a flood happens. >> regulators warned exxonmobil about safety violations along the line twice in the last year. the company says more than 280 people are involved in the

cleanup and more than nine miles of absorbent boom are deployed. >> we understand this is a very serious event. we understand that we need to get our full arms around where the exposure areas are. >> the line was shut down due to concerns about flooding in may. exxonmobil restarted it after determining that the risk of a leak or spill was low. the los alamos national lab re-opens for business tomorrow now that crews have regained the upper hand on that massive fire in mexico. thousands were let back home after a week and they're still worried about the possibility of flooding since the fire destroyed plants and trees leaving the either bare. sure, there were the usual fireworks and food to celebrate the fourth but hundreds of folks in salt lake city hit the slopes at the snowbird ski resort. why not. >> the record-breaking snow season has left plenty of white powder and even temperatures that reached into the 70s. didn't keep the resort from serving some wintertime fun. the average snowfall is 500

inches. this winter they got a whopping 783. >> skiing in july. >> yeah, wear sunscreen. >> i love it. i'll do it. sounds good. a look at this morning's weather from around the country, we do have some severe storms that threaten the northern plains from green bay to wisconsin to denver. there is still a possibility of golf ball-sized hail and winds gusting up to 80 miles an hour and also an isolated tornado. south florida could see afternoon thunderstorms. >> most of the nation will see temperatures warmer than usual. dallas is above 100 degrees for the tenth day in a row with high humidity. new york hits 90 instead of the usual low 80s. boise is 93 and seattle, a comfortable 80. well, coming up, trouble on wall street. why some of the world's biggest investment banks may soon be cutting jobs. and the cost of the royals after a lavish royal wedding. buckingham palace opens up the books and delivers the annual report on the state of the royal finances. @d@d@d@d@d@d@d@d@dd

there's a warning about a plan to bail out greece this morning. standard & poor's credit rating agency says greece would be in default on its debts under the plan recently proposed by french banks. that could derail efforts to give greece more time to repay its loans. that warning in s&p is inhibiting markets. tokyo's nikkei average picked up 7. the hang seng is down, and in london the ftse opened higher. the dow opens above 12,500 points. the nasdaq index starts the day above 2800.

minnesotans are again waking up without many government services. parks and other recreation sites were closed this weekend after the state government shut down friday. the government and legislature still cannot agree on how to close a $500 billion budget gap. japan's new disaster reconstruction minister didn't last long. ryu matsumoto resigned today after just a week on the job and after making remarks many considered offensive during a visit to the area devastated by the tsunami. he has since apologized. well, get ready for another round of layoffs in the financial industry. the international financing review says that hundreds of bankers will lose their jobs in the next few weeks, this because there's been a sharp downturn in demand for trading and also investment banking services. well, apparently still plenty of booty left in "the pirates of the caribbean" movie franchise. "on stranger tides," the fourth film in the series, has earned more than $1 billion worldwide since its release in april. "pirates of the caribbean" and

washington mon mom and the lincoln memorial. >> just perfect with that song. isn't that cool? looks great. love it. taking a look this morning at the road conditions, we do have flash flooding, making travel treacherous from los angeles to tucson. i-15 from salt lake city to las vegas, i-80 in des moines, omaha and cheyenne could be wet and thunderstorms from jacksonville to new orleans. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in denver, minneapolis, atlanta, and charlotte. well, a bizarre case is unfolding in washington state this morning where a seattle man is facing charges of murdering a 7-year-old girl near chicago in 1957. >> prosecutors say that jack ma cull lo was arrest bid police at the time but said he had been on a train from rockford to chicago when the girl was abducted. his alibi held up for 54 years until his train ticket turned up unused. he is a former police officer with a history of sexual

enantibioticle abuse claims against him. >> to another high-profile case. casey anthony jurors are meeting for deliberations. >> diana alvear is joining us from orlando with more. diana? >> reporter: peggy and daniel, good morning. six hours, that's how long the jury spent in deliberations on their first day. and they have a lot to consider. the prosecution did theiei best to leave a lasting and devastating impression of casey anthony. after 45 days of arguments, evidence and outbursts both in and out of court it's now the juju's turn to weigh in. is casey anthony guilty of murder? the jury got the case monday at noon after watching home video of a giggling 2-year-old caylee and hearing from the defendant herself one last time. an angry casey ranting in a recorded phone call from jail. >> i just want caylee back. that's all they're worried about. >> what do guilty people do? they lie. they avoid.

they run. they mislead. not just their family but the police. they divert attention away from themselves and they act like nothing is wrong. >> reporter: they posed a question, whose life was better wiwiout caylee and answered it by showing pictures of a tattoo casey got after the toddler disappeared that translated into "the beautiful life" along with a picture of casey dancing with friends. the defense claimed the prosecution's case is purely circumstantial and does not meet the standards required to convict on the capital murder charge. bear in mind it's not just that, there's also six other counts to consider and the jury will be back at 8:30 a.m. and this time no time limit on how long they're allowed to deliberate. peggy, daniel?? >> all right, thank you. a co-founder of a major mexican drug cartel is behehd bars today. he is a third in command of the cartel and one of mexico's most wanted men.

the u.s. state department offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. also from mexico a creative prison break that didn't quite work out. police say a woman was caught trying to sneak her common-law husband out of a press anyone a suitcase. the woman came to prison for a conjugal visit and guards noticed her pulling a big bulky suitcase. >> not a great idea. here's a story that makes you want to sleep with your boots on. josh snyder has spina bifida and doctors were amazed that there was no infection. he wants to catch the rodent that bit off his toes because he wants revenge. >> understandably. no screen on the windows and the window was open. he's going to find that rodent. britain's royals are resting

new york but in some places not so much. economics and the elements put a freeze on the fireworks. here's abc's karen travers. >> reporter: happy 235th birthday, america. all across the nation americans celebrated the fourth of july with parades, picnics and pyrotechnics. in the nation's capital, thousands lined up along the national mall. at the white house president obama and the first lady hosted a backyard barbecue for u.s. service members and their families. >> this day is possible because of your service. and so i think it's only appropriate that we give you a chance to celebrate it together, as well. >> reporter: the annual macy's fireworks lit up the skies over new york city. dry, hot conditions have led to a ban on fireworks in parts of arizona, alabama, florida and nearly all of texas. as wildfires continue to burn in new mexico, the governor is practically begging residents.
